pertronix ignition

(quoted from post at 11:05:34 08/13/18) Does the pertronix ignition require use of a ballast resistor or does it just need 12V to operate? This is on a M if it matters. Thanks

If you are using a 6 Volt Coil with 12V then yes it needs a ballast resistor. You need to keep the amperage under 4 amps going through the unit so it actually lives for a decent amount of time. Therefore, you need a total of 3ohms resistance minimum at the coil circuit, 4 is even better to make sure that unit will last.

The Pertronix needs powered, that does NOT go through the ballast resistor.

It then will function as a set of points, with SEPARATE wires for that, with our without s ballast resistor.

They maybe all well and good but since i am old school if one dies in the field with old school points and cond. and ya have hay layen and the clouds are building i can install a new set and have it back up and running including travel time of nomore then and hour and a half that ain't ah going to happen with the new fangled stuff . BTDT several times . Lucky for them i still had the OLD STUFF TO GO BACK TO .

This is on a pulling tractor...trying to eliminate the ballast resistor altogether. So it sounds like we just need to provide 12V and a 12V coil and we're good to go.
Honestly we'd rather run a mag like we do on our other tractor but don't have another one. Thanks for the replies.
