Magneto issues

I have a W-9 with a magneto that does not produce spark. The magneto is good, I have verified it by removing it and installing it on an H. It runs strong on the H. When I place it back on the W-9, there is not spark at all. W-9 has new plugs and I leave to kill switch discontented to make sure that is not causing the issue. What am I missing?

Might ask, how are you checking the spark, at wire end? Are you using solid core wires?
These flange mount mags ground through the bolts, don't usually have much for ground
problems. Sometimes the kill switch is backwards, or is the kill unhooked while checking?

Kill switch is disconnected. Wires are not slid core. I am checking for spark with a test light and verifying the test light by holing the end of the wire to close to the spark plug to see if there is any arc. Assuming I am not getting a ground through the bolts, I can try cleaning them up, along with the washer and mounting back side of the mounting flange. Tractor was recently painted so maybe some paint needs to be removed.

Sounds like a plan, do you say the wires are not solid core? I usually check
for spark with a tester wire that has the bulb built into it, but we do so
many tractors that the purchase of that was necessary.

Doesn't a W-9 magneto rotate the opposite way from an H? A magneto won't do much if you rotate it the wrong way. Do you hear the impulse click when you crank the W-9? How about when you crank the H with the same magneto?

The W-9 magneto runs in reverse direction to the rest of the IH tractors The diesels also run in the opposite but the advance is different.

Sounds funny but just for kicks try it again on the H and like you say the H runs so use the cap and wires from the W-9 and see if the H runs seems to be the only difference between the two engines is the wires.

yes, the W9 magneto turns COUNTER CLOCKWISE the same as the diesel tractors. so i dont know who he is trying to fool by saying it worked on an H. ALL THE OTHER GAS TRACTORS ARE CLOCKWISE.

A gas W-9 turns counterclockwise. A Farmall H magneto turns clockwise. If it works on your H. You have the wrong magneto.

The serial number on a W-9 magneto will end with the letter L meaning left-hand. Example H412345L

The magneto for a Wd-9 or Farmall MD. The magneto serial number will end with the letter D meaning diesel. H412345D

I have a W-9 magneto for sale.

ooohh just a minute... are you sure you have a counter clockwise magneto for that W9 ??? might have wrong magneto on it!

This is most likely the issue. The original mag on the W-9 had bad points so I took the one off the H in a pinch, hoping to get it started. Do you happen to recondition Magnetos?

there you go, you created the problem and didnt even say you were using an H mag, but some of us figured it out. and not most likely the issue ... it is the issue. change the points in the w9 mag . like whats so hard.
