Farmall 200 idle problem

I bought two farmall 200's at an auction. Both had leaky head gaskets so I pulled the heads, had them resurfaced and started putting them back together. Got one back together and it runs like an expensive watch. The other one surges at low rpm and idle. Allowed to continue it eventually stops. If I close the choke a little it levels out but I can smell the rich mixture. I rebuilt both carbs. I Did the whole tune up thing, new coil etc. The carb is a Carter. I have access to an almost new Zenith. Will the Zenith work/fit with no alterations.

A number of years ago I worked on a cub that would do the same thing at start up. If I grabbed the carb to gov linkage it would stop doing that and run just fine. Your problem could be in the linkage or in the carb or even in the intake manifold and have a vacuum leak

As far as vacuum goes. Are you just talking about the air intake? because there is no vacuum anything anywhere on these tractors. The 1.6" hose between the carb and the air breather has a crack. I'll try gorilla taping that up to see if it changes anything, thanks.

i know that when the throttle shaft and housing get worn any tractor will not idle properly, as its sucking air pass there. zenith carb. on minnie U is bad for that.

Vacuum as in the needed suction of the engine to pull gas into the cylinders. All engine need X number of vacuum or they will not run as they should. So a simple vacuum leak in the manifold or carb gasket can/will cause odd problems. One way to test for a vacuum problem is with an unlit propane torch and wave it around the manifold and carb area while running. If there is a change in RPM then you have a vacuum leak

Sounds like the governor needs adjusting or repaired. Check the travel of the carburetor linkage with the engine off. Check with the throttle lever all the way back then all the way forward. I bet the good one is different then the bad one. Just went through the governor on one of my BN's and fixed that exact problem. Let us know if you need advice on working on the governor, they can be tricky.
Case/IH still has the (expensive) parts.
