Can a J4 mag get oil into the points area from a bad seal somewhere. My Cub has been running poorly and when I took the cover off the points about a table spoon of oil came out. I think its from a leak I had in the oil filter gasket last year that sprayed oil all over the place but I'm not positive. I cleaned the whole area with solvent, filed and re-gapped the points and now I have no spark. Maybe the solvent wrecked the condenser or the wire to the condenser as I didn't remove it. Is the condenser different for a H4 vs a J4 mag and are they different from a distributor condenser. I have a condenser laying around but its probably from a distributor. I'm going to have to open it up tonight and have a look.

If the seal on the governor shaft that drive the mag fail it will fill the entire mag with engine oil. Only one guess how I know. Once the mag is removed that seal can be pulled using one of the small slide hammer dent pullers. The new seal should be installed 23/32 inch deep from the face of the housing where the governor mounts to the face of the seal. There is no stop to keep it from going on back into the governor teeth, so you need to be careful reinstalling.

Engine was rebuilt after I got it a few years ago and was running great until recently. I'm pretty sure clean points and a good condenser will get the tractor running and hopefully running good again. The tractor was acting like it was too rich and I think it was weak spark.
