Recentley got a 15-30 with a E4A magneto, Can this be replaced with an F-4 mag. Never had any experience with the E4A heard they were not as good. Thanks, Mark

most definitly can. the f4 mag replaced the e4 on some tractors like the late 10-20's had the f4. the f4 has the automatic impulse coupling.

i just cant remember at the moment. would need to look. if your e4 is working i would not worry about it. just that you have to manually set the impulse when starting tractor. dont think there is a whole of diff. besides that. have them both and both are good.

Mark, The E4A is just fine if it is working, Has manual impulse though.
The E4A is more expensive to rebuild than F-4, why most get changed.
Yes you can install F-4 , you will need F-4 couplers.

I have an early F4 with an E 4A type automatic impulse that was used on the early F12. So, the e4a was offered with an automatic impulse.

There are different coupler adapters that install on the governor shaft, they are different lengths
to change over to the F-4 magneto. You can also have a longer coupler made or found, but the coupler
adapter you need can be found on any F-20 parts tractor. The magneto mounting brackets are basically
all the same and when IH went to the F-4 they used a coupler that is larger diameter and thinner.
The E4A is a good magneto, but as said earlier they cost more to rebuild, almost anyone can rebuild
an F4 and the parts are easily available.
Both of these are great dependable mags, IH had that worked out well.
