Amish Wheels

Amish do not use tractors but the Mennonites do and they put steel wheels on there tractors. The was a tractor dealer north of me that would sell a brand new tractor to them and would install steel wheels on them before they delivered them to the new owners. Sort of odd to see a brand new tractor sitting on a truck with steel wheels

I live close to the largest Old Amish Order west of the Mississippi the Kalona,Iowa area and the steel wheels used on their tractors are some pretty neat wheels as their newer tractors with bigger horsepower demand great traction and are not cheap the old fashion lug types just arent to be seen anymore. Mennonites have used rubber tires just like others. Side note the Amish have some pretty new types of lites on the buggies.

There is a group of Amish in Howard County IN that do use tractors and they are allowed rubber tires as there are no gravel roads in the area. They still use horse and buggy for transportation. No electricity in their homes and all that other Amish stuff. Probably one of the most progressive Amish communities anywhere.

Up around South Whitley the Amish there use horses and steel wheeled implements. Same down around Greens Fork IN

They can get permission from the Bishop where rubber is needed so as not to ruin roads their habits sure vary from area to area. Im 83 and can remember when horses did the field work but now have been all replaced with tractors. Lots of the crops are now harvested by combines cant even find any oats that used to be harvested by thrashing machines. Little sheds along the road with solar power to charge cell phones ect but the buggies still are here.

Some Amish do in fact use tractors, they are not all the same. There are two different communities of Amish near me, one group has tractors, the other horses. And yes I do know the difference between the Amish and Mennonites.

If you want to see what the Amish are up to go to the Lagrange Indiana Tractor show this coming weekend. The Amish will be lined up at the dyno testing there tractors.

Yes, some Amish do use tractors. Around here, they use tractors for PTO and belt work around the farm, but not in a field.

It all depends on the rules of their particular Bishop. Some are more conservative, some less so.

There are some Mennonites that are every bit as conservative as an Amish and it is hard to tell the difference unless you know what to look for. There are also some Mennonites that are just like the rest of us. Very hard to tell that they are Mennonite. And then there are about 6 varieties of them between the two extremes.

Blanket generalities rarely apply.
