706 Starting woes

My ?65 706 gasser wont start with the button on dash. New Key ignition switch, new battery cables
and battery is good. It starts right up when I short across with screwdriver at solenoid.....
Do I need a new starter button on dash or what?
Thanks,
Cmore

If your shorting the small terminal to the battery cable then yes you either have something wired wrong on the ignition switch or a bad wire from the starter button to the solenoid or a bad starter switch. If you can some how jump across the 2 terminals on the starter button and have it spin over then you will know if it is the switch

I have a New switch.... that is where Key goes
Think I?ll try a new starter button...
Thanks
Cmore

I would be checking the "safety starting switch" before throwing any more parts at it.

Pretty sure it's go one, but I can't tell you, offhand, where it's located.

It'll be somewhere in the orange wire from the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid to the starter pushbutton switch.

Check safety switch. It located under deck plate close to clutch rod. Quick question, are you pushing clutch down when you try to start it?

Only thing a new switch says is it is new but you could either have wired it up worng or it could well be one of those made in the land of almost right and be bad right fro mthe get go and that is why I say try the jumper on the old starter switch so you know if it is the starter switch or the key swithc

I do when I?m in the seat.
Kinda hard to hold down clutch when I?m starting with screwdriver.

Strange thing is that it will start occasionally using the button?.
Once every 5 or 6 times.....maybe.

PLEASE find someone to help you and fix this before you run yourself over!!!!!!!!!

Have helper hold down clutch for your safety, and to facilitate testing...

Grab unpowered test light, while helper is holding down clutch check for power from ignition switch to pushbutton switch, if power to pushbutton switch, have helper depress start pushbutton, then check for power at second terminal on pushbutton witch.

If power there, move on to clutch safety switch, since clutch is depressed, there should be power at both clutch switch terminals, and on to "S" terminal on starter solenoid, and engine should be cranking.

With the light, it should be easy to find out where the power is being lost, from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.

To me that says button is going bad or you have something loose some place so it works when it wants to work
