International 504 gas

Hello, my 504 needs dist. bushings. The shaft wobbles easily with my fingers. I never had to pull the dist. out before but I'm going to now. looks pretty easy. Any advice will be helpful. Thanks, Dave

Mark on the out side of the distributor where the #1 plug wire goes. Then pull the distributor cap off and turn the engine over till the rotor points to that mark. That should have it on TDC of the compression stoke. Then mark where that points on the block so you can then drop the distributor back in so every thing is lined up. If you do not do those things when you try to put it back in your going to be playing the game of figuring out the firing order and timing the hard way

Thanks OLD, I looked it up in my IT IH-201 manual and it says there is no bushings. I looked it up in YT parts and they show bushings. I guess I'll just take it apart and see what is in there.

Well it has to have something there for the shaft ot spin in. Bu can you replace that is a maybe maybe not type of thing

The IH distributors I've had out on the bench have a couple of bronze plain bearings, inline for the shaft.

I've never tried to pull them out but the first one would be a bit tricky, some kind of internal puller or have to angle a rod in there and tap on it a bit. Possibly saw thru the thickness in 2 places almost thru to reduce the pressure and then tap it out.

I can't say about the sizing but I would mic (micrometer) the bore with a telescoping gage to check the size, the new bronze bushing would be .0005" oversize ideally. I can't say if they used a custom (not nominal) size on either ID or OD but that would have to be duplicated for the new.

Also important would be to check the shaft and make sure its not worn down from abrasive material that got embedded into the bronze. As I recall the shaft is not hardened.

Arbor press would be ideal for inserting the new plain bearings.
