560 not sliding together.

So I split the tractor at the transmission to T/A housing. Replaced the seals and gasket and the bearing. Now I am trying to get it back together and it is binding at the 5th speed gear set(I believe). The lower PTO shaft appears to be engaged and there is still a small air gap before the T/A quill engages the main shaft bearing. I have tried raising and lowering the joint to see if it would go. I have two long bolts through the halves as alignment pins. I have tried rocking the tractor and it does not seam to help. I have separated it once to try a slightly different angle of the gears but no luck yet.I quit for the day because of my job that actually pays me something. Is there any advice on how to do this without forcing it. Usually when I force something it breaks something.

I can wiggle that part so it is loose. It seems to be tight on the shaft below it. I may have to back it out a gain and try to match the gears again.

I don't know specifically about your tractor, but I have put many transmissions, etc. together. What I usually do when I encounter this problem,is to rotate the shaft(s) as I push.Supporting it on long dowels is a good idea,as you have done. You may need to fish down in there, and lift the shaft with a coat hanger bent into a hook,as you rock and push and rotate.DO NOT FORCE IT.The few tractors that I split for T/A work-I did a double split, which I think is easier to reassemble.Sometimes you just need to walk away for a while.Good luck,Mark.

Been awile since I done mine. I think you only have the input & the PTO.

You say PTO is mated so......................

That pilot bearing is all that is left, I think.

I might have two things that may help.

Did you wrap a rubber band around the pilot bearing on the front of the pinion shaft? The rubber band will hold the lower rollers up allowing the bearing to slide into the TA gear. I also shift the transmission into 4th gear. This will hold the front of the pinion shaft up.

I'm also woundering it you have the belt pulley drive open so you can see inside the transmission.

Like others have said do not force the transmission together.

So I succeeded in getting it back together. Here is a picture of where I was at when I posted yesterday. I lifted the middle a bit more and shifted into and out of fourth gear a few times as suggested and then rocking the rear end a little started adding a little force and I saw top gear to the right of the rubber band and the gear it touches under jump a little and they lined up and it went together. Still have a way to go before I can run it. Thanks for the suggestions and cautions.
