Noise in Super A tranny (long)

Just had a different noise come from the tranny area on my Super A while I was mowing. It was a very low tone that sounded like the word wobble, wobble, wobble, as soon as I pushed in the clutch it slowed down and stopped with the rest of the tranny noise. I just took the shifter plate off to look around inside, I found nothing out of the ordinary, except, the forward gear slider gears have a little twist play I'll call it, on the shaft, not turning play like backlash on the shaft, but if I grab the sides of the gear, I can kind of twist it on the shaft, not a lot, just a little.
It only made the noise for less than half a minute, guess I go finish that part of the yard and check back.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I've seen the transmission input bearing fail, and it started out as a clunking and lead to a knock, that sounds like an engine knock but stopped when you pushed the clutch in and another that starting squalling whenever the clutch was out.

Two ideas. The "wobble" on the forward most gear (#24 in the diagram) should be less than 1/16" at the uter teeth moved by hand pressure. The common noise maker in those transmissions is a broken, or failing oil slinger These can make odd noises. The slinger is intended to lubricate upper trans rearward parts when doing belt work or idling when they do not include rotating those components. Jim
