Generator Not Charging

I searched generators on here and it gave me a few ideas. First I tried polarizing, that did nothing. Second tried grounding the field terminal on the generator directly to the frame, that did nothing. Last thing I tried was to run a test light from the A terminal to the frame, maybe I am wrong but I thought that if the generator was throwing out juice it should have lit up.

Looking for any other ideas to try or is there another method to see if the generator is actually working.

Thanks

I am not the expert, but believe there are two types of field, one energize to charge, the other ground.

Do you have a volt meter to use? Doesn't sound like it is charging. Might check the condition of the brushes.

Unless changed by a prior owner, all IH tractors were Delco equipped. They were the A circuit type. with grounding the field to make them charge. Your testing was correct. I would advise taking it to a rebuild shop. With no output when the field is grounded, it needs help. Following John T charging system check list is perfect. Jim

Bowhunter, you posted "Second tried grounding the field terminal on the generator directly to the frame, that did nothing."

If all else is correct ???? and its properly polarized (try that first) and grounding the gennys FLD post still
produces no charge, there's a good chance the genny is bad. See my Troubleshooting Procedure linked below

"Last thing I tried was to run a test light from the A terminal to the frame, maybe I am wrong but I thought that if the generator was throwing out juice it should have lit up"

The gennys output is indeed between the ARM post and case/frame/ground. No voltage there when turning means no
charging

Ok thanks for the comments. Does anyone know if the 300 utility shared a common generator with other tractors? If I could find a donor is what I was thinking.

Had some thoughts of converting to 12 volt but as of now it seems to work just fine with the 6. If I can get it going again fairly reasonable.
