battery and charger question

farmal mark

I have a farmal H with the original 6V positive ground system with electric start. The battery I have in it is a exide commercial CCA625 at Zero and 750 amps at 32F. I only use this tractor once or twice a year. I was wondering if I connected a one amp charger to it and the forgot about it for 6 months, would this overcharge or damage the battery? Also, the charger I have in mind to use is a Wards motorcycle/car battery charger, article number 61-81056. I don't have the owner's manual for it, but when I have it set to 6 volts and attach my multi meter, it read 0.11volts. Does this mean the charger is defective?

The charger may not put out any significant voltage until it senses the electrical "load" of the battery being connected (basically sensing a voltage already applied to the +/- terminals. This prevents arcs which could damage the circuitry via overcurrent.

Personally I would look into a battery minder/battery tender which does some different conditioning than just pushing a charge to a setpoint level. There are 6 volt models available.
