How to I get the Spark and Throttle rods off my Farmall R...

Hey all.

I am super close to finishing up my Farmall Regular Project. I am having one problem though, the spark and throttle control rods are so badly rusted that the tube and the rod itself are rusted together. I cant seem to get them apart so I am trying to just get them off the frame in one piece. How can I do this? I have already taken out the pin on the lever facing the steering wheel and I have beat on the rod trying to get it out but no luck. Am I missing something?

The pictures are of the two levers.

I have also tried to get the rod and tube out with the bolt out of the two levers but have put the bolt back so I don't lose it.

I never operated a Regular, but can u make a new one,get a piece of pipe of the outside diameter, or i am i missing something ?

PB Blaster and patience. Then more of each. Then more PB. Then wait?. generally works for my projects.

I have had to do this many times, like suggested earlier, penetrating oil and time.
I tried to heat the tube before, that only warps the tube and rod usually. I have found the
rust problem to be more at the ends than the center, so if you remove the steering shaft altogether you can
work the penetrating oil down from each end and work the levers back and forth. If you get
in a hurry you will probably loosten up the levers where you will have to do your back and forth with
vice grips, try not to let the tube lever slip and turn.
Also have had to replace the tube, cutting it off the rod, these tubes are available but I usually have
to buy more than I need. I think im out right now.

Ben,

I would just make new rods and tubes out of material from a local metal supplier or hardware store. Just cut the old stuff off, and remove your levers from it. Might cost a little money, but would be much easier. And, when sliding all the components back together, grease the internal rod liberally prior to inserting it into the external tube to prevent any future issues.

Can't wait to see it up and running.
