Transmission Work and Top Cover Removal

Greetings!

I have gotten to the point in my restoration of my Super H where I need to investigate the "rumbling" in her transmission. I am preparing to remove the top cover. Can you give any advice about what I can expect when I raise the cover? Will I have to remove anything from the gearshift before I remove the cover? Any
thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have it in neutral, would be nice to make some pull point's out of some angle iron, and a engine crane !

It is one of the most straight forward tractor repairs I have ever done. Take the bolts out and lift it straight up.

I have a Photobucket page with a ton of pictures documenting my adventure. I will try and post a link. Otherwise I use the same username on photobucket so you should be able to search for it.

The top cover is Doweled in several locations, 4 I think, top cover will be hard to get started moving up off those dowels, they are tight tolerance for a reason, force the cover too hard and you will break it! Must go straight up, not up on one side or one end then the other end or side.

Shift forks will lift right off the gears they shift into/out of gear, make not of those gears exact locations, you will need the gears there when the top goes back on.

Dad and I had the top off on the '51 M twice in the 1960's, It did about everything, both times turned out to be broken/cracked drive yoke and a bad bearing on the input shaft. Tractor got all new seals, gaskets, & bearings one time too, first time IIRC, second time it got the Fast 4th gear package, faster 2nd, 3rd, & 6-1/2 mph 4th gear. With M&W live hyd, M&W 4" Add P'owr sleeves & pistons and Char-Lynn Pas it's a Super M with good brakes!

Everything in your Super H will be smaller and lighter than the similar parts in an M/SM. If I knew when the transmission in your Super H "Rumbles" I could make an educated list of things to inspect. They are pretty simple and reliable tractors.

Made this contraption to pull the cover on my Super M, bolted where the seat support went, also had a small chain from the clevice to the steering support bolts and lifted with my engine hoist. Easy does it, might have to tap something thin like a putty knife through the gasket in several places.

I used a pulley system chained up to the rafters, and lifted and lowered mine slowly and easily. And safely. The shifter forks especially like to go straight up and straight down. Don't bend them.
