Farmall M Sleeve

Just wanted to post an update I did get another sleeve and it was a very tight fit into the block. For those of you that don?t know I cracked a sleeve installing and got a reliance sleeve and it slid all the way in by hand bottoming out so I managed to get a tisco sleeve and basically I had to pull it in all the way in with a threaded rod. I think I may have to hone the sleeve a bit to get the right piston clearance. What is the appropriate clearance for a 4? aluminum piston and thin wall sleeves? I didn?t really want to hone the block but I know they should have slid in like half of the way by hand but they wouldn?t is there any other problems I might face besides the sleeve being to tight on the piston now? Lord forbid I ever have to take these sleeves out but I?m sure where there?s a will there?s a way

0.002"-0.005" Should be good for a 4" bore.
It looks like the IH service manual says 0.0025"-0.0035" skirt to wall clearance.

A friend of mine was rebuilding an MD and the new sleeves he bought were way too loose. Someone told him to epoxy them in. He never did get that engine rebuilt.

Putting it in with a piece of dry ice (thick gloves!!) will shrink it to install. Getting it out is easy. using a stick welder make 3 or four passes up the sleeve (spaced equally) don't weld a bead, just a stringy quick pass maybe 4 to 5 seconds per pass, will shrink the sleeve for removal! Protect the crank's rod journal! Jim
