Replacing O-Ring on Steering Column IH 547

Oil seeps out of the steering column and down the dash on my IH 574 gas. It was theorized here that it may be the seal. Looking at the diagram shows an o-ring that may be easily replaced. If it's pumping oil, it wouldn't be the pump right?

What's the difficulty in replacing the o-ring? A new pump is in the $900 range so I'm hoping it's not that. I've attached the diagram of the assembly.

Go on down the list under hydraulics, and click on (10-18) - HYDRAULICS, HYDROSTATIC INTEGRAL STEERING ASSY. It is a break of the steering pump and shows the o-ring you need. It is not horrible to be replaced and as long as there isn't a deep groove in the shaft, it should seal ok.

ivor from uk here and 40 years ago I worked at main IH dealer and I remember there was a run of steering chest seals leaking on new tractors... it was quite a bit of work removing steering chest and a special tool was needed to insert new seal once it was dismantled.. obviously cleanliness is vital.. sorry I cant be more helpful but it was a long time ago

You are on the wrong parts book page for the parts breakdown, O-ring in that drawing is not the shaft seal.

Seal is easy to replace after pulling steering wheel and a foam and a felt dust seal (if they are still there), then snapring # 14. Looks like you have to be a seal kit part number 68200C1 to get the shaft seals.

I'm glad I asked, I'm very new to this.

Do you suggest this is something to attempt? The tractor is usable and it doesn't always happen. My neighbor is very knowledgable and would help but it comes down to having the tools and the time without a tractor, I don't know what to expect.

Thanks for the replies

are you saying it is not necessary to remove steering valve from tractor to fit new seal also special tool is not needed.... as I said 40 years ago the steering valve was removed and special tool was needed unless different steering valves were fitted to overseas tractors...? is the oil cooler blocked

bob haqs it right. There is a seal kit for that . you pull the steering wheel then put it back on just a bit to turn the shaft r&l quickly. There is a snap ring needs to come out and a brass bushing. No O-ring. there is a seal with the bushing. Will take about a half day to do.There are 2 holes on the steering wheel for pulling the wheel. I think 1/4 or 5/16 fine thread. Clean out the holes well. I use a plate with a pin/socket on the shaft end. Tighten the 2 bolts down to pull it.

It?s not to hard to install all you need for tools is steering wheel
puller and 11/8 socket snap ring pilers and 7/8 deep socket
