My International 454 with a diesel engine(D 179)is weak & has been running hot during my bushhogging chores last summer. It's got a good bit of blow-by. I think it needs to be rebuilt. Are the cheaper rebuild kits worth their money & do they hold up ? Which is the best to buy & do I need to go with the in-frame or complete engine rebuild kit ? Would like some opinions please & thanks in advance !

Hi, I cannot comment on rebuild kits but running hot, look at bottom rad hose when running at PTO speed to see if it is being sucked flat then the rad core is clogged with scale and requires steam cleaning. Also check water pump and thermostat.

I get my kits from AgKits and have never been disappointed. They are associated with Syracuse Crank. How is the oil pressure? You may be able to get by with an in frame if the crank doesn't need to be reground. I like to split the tractor and do a complete rebuild. There is not much difference in the kit price. Can you do the work yourself? That will save you a lot of money.

Thanks Jimb2 ! I?ll be sure & check the cooling system out completely. I plan on either going with a new radiator or at least a new core or maybe a ?rodding? if I can find a shop to do it & it?ll hold up to the procedure. Plan on installing a new water pump also along with new hoses & thermostat. I?m thinking the radiator has been a problem for a lot of years but I?ve just been getting by w/it. Time to do something now though ! Thanks again for your time !

Thanks so much for your reply Phil !
I?ll be doing it myself.
I?m gonna put me a good oil pressure gauge on it & crank it & see what it reads. Thanks for that advice for sure !!!
I?ll probably go all the way through the engine with new oil pump & all bearings.
A friend & I broke it apart many years ago & put a new seal & plate on rear of crank where it was pouring oil. I think I?ll be able to handle it. We didn?t get the timing just right. I say this because it has to spin to much to start. I later maxed out the adjustment on the injector pump. It helped but still not perfect. I want to address this while in there too & probably just go ahead & have the head, injector pump, & injectors checked & redone by a professional.
It was once a nice little tractor & had just about everything one needs on a tractor that size. I?d like to get it back like new.
Thanks again for your reply, advice & time !!!

Hi, if njection pump timing is not correct, it will be difficult to start and lack power and smoke and slobber black oily crap. My brother undertook to change the seal on the injection pump drive shaft on his 454 and it had all the symptoms you described. To make a long story short, I fixed the timing and after about 1 hour of medium load work the exhaust had cleaned up , starting good and power had returned.
Check for Diesel leaking into the crankcase as that will cause low oil pressure and excess blow by.
