pull the gov housing and you will probably find teeth missing on the gear that drives the dist. You will also need to turn the engine over to make sure teeth aren't missing on the cam gear

If the timing seems to be jumping out of time you need to remove the gov housing so you can see the gears that
drive it mite just have some teeth missing on the gear that drives the dist. Had that happen once

I had the exact thing happen on an A farmall about 25 years ago. The tractor would run great after I retimed it and then it would die and not start back. I could time it again and it would run for just a few minutes and die once more. Mine also had a slight knocking from the timing gears in the front. I pulled the governor out and there were at least 3 teeth missing off the governor gear and another couple from the cam gear.

I owned a 68 volvo years ago that the dist., actually came lose and moved fractionally. This the machaic had timed 3 weeks before putting in new plugs and other "up dates" then the engine went irratick took it back in the mechanic asked if I had been working on the engine ( hadnt even opened the hood for that time CONCLUSION the mechanic found the dist was not tight.
Just my experience and thoughts. ?? Is the dist., absolutly tight. I found I had to redesign an open end wrench to tighten the back cap screw.
