Can I use a Farmall 656 solenoid on an IH 574?

We theorize the solenoid on the 574 is gone, but I have a broken down 656 and was wondering if they use the same solenoid. I was seeing it's a solenoid for a certain delco starter. Both are regular gas.

Just shooting of the cuff I would say yes. If the length of it is the same from the surface where it
mounts to the starter to the terminals. If that is a go, pull to two off and compare the diameter of
the plungers and the depth of the holes. If the same I would say it is a go.

fter googling it, they do seem to use the same solenoid. I swapped them and tried to get it to turn over but no luck.

My original problem was the wiring was deteriorating. I had my neighbor that knows how to work on everything over and do a quick fix on the wiring. At first it worked, but after a while it stopped turning over again.

He tried shorting it out and couldn't get it to turn over, and theorized it was the solenoid. Now I'm not sure if it's still the wiring or maybe the starter itself.

Any idea how I can troubleshoot this?

Does it look the same? will it 'fit'? Since they are both 12 volt,I would say yes. They are probably even the same starter.

You can test the starter sort of by using a heavy jumper across the 2 big posts on the solenoid. It should at least spin up by doing that. If it does not spin up then good chance the starter has gone bad.

As for the wiring my IH584 has only 2 wires on it. One is the start wire which I touch the battery and it spins over and the other wire I touch to the charge post of the alternator to excite it and that is all is has but it is a DIESEL

an I use a charger rather than a jumper? Mine has 3 wires. Unless I got the two small wires on the wrong places I'm not sure what's wrong

A battery charger will not have the guts needed to spin and engine over. Ya while off the tractor a big as in 200amp jump type charge will spin a good one over off the engine.

As for the wire you should have the battery cable and then where the starter motor hooks to the solenoid and that if it has 2 small wires one would be a ballast resister by pass and the other the start wire. Easy to figure out which is which with a simple jumper wire. Take jumper wire and hold it on the small terminal and then touch the battery cable. If it is the ballast resister by pass nothing should happen If it is the start terminal the engine should spin over

An update: it seems the issue is not the solenoid and possibly the starter. I'm going to look into seeing if I can swap starters now

Pull the starter and take it to an auto parts store. Most will test them for free and that test will tell you if it is bad or going bad
