Cub Lo-boy 154 clutch driving me nuts...

I have a neighbour with a 154 Lo-boy that I?m trying to help out and it is not cooperating. So a few weeks ago the tractor was working fine and then started to become harder and harder to get the clutch to release. We removed the cover over the mid section and attempted to adjust the clutch and found two things. The brake pucks were worn completely out and the clutch finger pivots seemed to be taking most of the travel of the thrust bearing before releasing the clutch.

After ordering a clutch kit, new brake pucks, and surfacing the rear flywheel we put it back together and despite adjusting all the free play out the clutch absolutely will not even slip (the hub of the disc is facing forward) and applying the clutch brakes does nothing but burn them up and lug the engine down. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Many thanks, Sam

Should be able to watch the throwout engage the clutch fingers and release the pressure plate with the engine off. The pressure plate will visibly lift off the clutch disk. If that's not happening you put something together wrong.

I can do as you describe with a few differences.
One, in an effort to overcome this issue I have
eliminated almost all free play so it starts with the
throwout bearing against the fingers. As the fingers
are pushed the pressure plate just doesn?t lift off. It
just doesn?t seem like there?s enough travel. That
was the reason I replaced the pressure plate as it
seemed all the travel was being lost in the clutch
finger pivots. I do seem to lose travel in several
locations, the clutch pedal pivot underneath has
some play, the release fork pivot has a little, and the
flywheel seems to move a little. Thanks, Sam

This tractor has the clutch mounted at the front of the transmission facing forwards (or backwards - compared to 99.99% of clutches I?ve seen before. Thanks, Sam

After trying several things and removing play from the linkage in several areas I?ve wound up with the original disc and pressure plate back in and got it working. The springs in the new pressure plate are significantly stiffer than in the old one and the braket that the throwout bearing linkage mounts to was flexing too much to release the clutch. This winter I?m intending to rebuild the new pressure plate with the old springs as well as removing some more slop. Thanks, Sam
