International 574 starter cables deteriorated - how to fix?

Just had a miserable time out in the 100 degree weather here in NY baling, and after having to shut off the tractor to deal with the baler, it wouldn't get power to the starter.

I realized it's because the cable that has 3 other cables that goes onto the starter has practically disintegrated. I spent almost 2 hours trying to resplice it and while I almost got it working, it eventually became futile.

Other than replacing it all, my only other option would be to somehow use cables from my farmall 656 I have broken down. Otherwise, what is the part I need? And how difficult of a fix is it? Is it a common part I could find anywhere or is it something that will need to be ordered?

(quoted from post at 16:24:54 07/01/18) Hi is your 574 Gas or Diesel?

I have some wiring diagrams for 574.
Repost is you want the wiring diagrams.

t's regular gas, I'd definitely like the diagram if possible, thanks. What is the part called exactly? I've been looking all over at the parts websites and I'm not seeing any cables

Being a gas it is pretty simple. Shut just to get by one can hot wire it by running a wire from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil and as long as it will turn over it will run but of course you cannot shut it down with out unhooking the hot wire. BTDT many times to get by

ould you elaborate a bit more on this? I'm really new to mechanics for the most part.

Very simple to get it started....just take a long screwdriver and short across the solonid from big nut to small nut!!
Starts right up...
Cmore

Turn on Key
Get long screwdriver
Don?t be afraid of a few spa4ks
Put screwdriver on large nut/bolt where battery cable attaches to solenoid
Quickly touch to ant smaller nut/bolt on solonoid
Engine will turn over and should start
Cmore

If it will help throw me an e-mail and I can then either call you or e-mail you as to how to get your tractor running. I have a IH584 that caught fire and I have it set up so I can start it with one wire and then it is up and running till I shut it down

Unless you know for sure what wires are good and what is bad it sure as heck can be a whole lot more complicated then just using a screw drive to the solenoid. With what little he has said you do not know what all is going on so hot wiring it is likely to get it going at least till he can get down with what he is doing.

Am I correct in that its just the big cable to the starter, not the others? Its just a battery cable. Any parts store can match that up.

That's what I thought when I read it. Just match the lug size at the end, the length, and the approximate gauge. It doesn't have to have the lead (Pb) lug on the end (can have 2 flat lugs), it doesn't have to match in color just to get the tractor going.

You can make offset lugs or distribution lugs with a 1/8" thick piece of brass flat bar that you cut and drill, and some hex bolts, usually a 3/8-16 is the one you want.

If it is just the main battery cables, you can get that at any NAPA, Oreilly's, CarQuest, Advance, AutoZone, Tractor Supply, machinery dealer. Length, thickness and end type are the most important factors.

One goes from the + terminal on the battery to the big lug on the starter. The other goes from the - terminal on the battery to any big bolt on the frame of the tractor.

You don't have to run the cables through the factory routing just to get the tractor going again. Just run them where they won't get pinched by pedals and where you won't trip on them. You can re-route them later and fix it right when you get the tractor home where you have tools, and hopefully a garage or shop, or at least a nice shade tre to work on the tractor.

If you mean other wiring problems, you may want to engage the help of a professional mechanic given your admitted level of expertise, unless you are a REAL quick study and good at figuring things out. It'll be nigh on impossible to walk you through wiring a tractor like that on a forum like this.

t's the cable with the 3 smaller cables. The small ones have deteriorated. If I recall correctly that's the cable coming from the negative terminal.

be very careful with screwdriver trick, works well to start,BUT VERY DANDEROUS,MANY PEOPLE HAVE LOST LIFE AND LIMB DOING SUCH STUNTS,MAKE SURE TRANNY IS IN NEUTRAL.

I know that but he does not seem to so tell him not me. I have driven so many machine that the owners could not figure out how to start then most would even believe. Shoot my IH584 has only 2 wires on it. One to start it and the other to excite the alternator and both you do while standing next to it

This is one of those times a picture would be worth way more than a thousand words!

To be totally honest I have no idea of what a 574 is but also know that 98% chance I could get it running in a few minutes unless the problem is more that "just" a wire or two on the starter.

A simple gas engine with coil ignition needs power going to the coil and a starter that will crank it over, well and a functioning fuel system but that does not seem to be the topic here!

And if you can get power to the coil and give it a pull with another machine you don't even have to have a starter on the engine.
