I'm working on my 1947 farmall h. It has been running rough and the distributor was a little wobbly. I got a distributor off ebay-- some parts were a little different but we put it together and it runs. I did the points. It stil runs a little rough and smokes a little-- this is how this tractor has been.. Diagnosis?

Rough could be a few things point gap, fuel flow, timing, just to name a few.
For smoke depends on whether it is black an a trace, like when cold in winter with the choke to far out, or blue like from oil burning. Blue could also be your rough running, if it is fouling the plugs. Air flow will also have an effect on it. When was the last time the oil bath cup was cleaned out, and new oil added. Is the vertical pipe in side plugged, or the screen mesh plugged up.
Black smoke is a sign of over fuel, blue is oil. Look at your plugs. They will tell you a lot about whether it is oil or fuel. Oil will be build up on the plugs fuel will be soot.

Have you checked the valve lash recently?
Not having a book handy, I'm guessing ,017 on the exhaust
& ,015 on the intakes----hot---engine warm. How are the
plug wires??

The intake manifold was the trouble on one a buddy off mine had, was cracked or rusted through inside somewhere. He tried everything but always ran rough at idle and didn't start as good as it should. Runs like new now.

I bought an H on an auction once, and it never did settle down and run as smooth as was expected.

I had a couple different carbs on it, went through the ignition, even went so far as to replace the intake gaskets and check the valve lash.

When I finally traced it down, the distributor drive gear was off one cog. Fixed that, and it runs great.

So I changed the oil and plugs. I think the wires are good. I fiddled with the points and carb and have it running ok but still not quite right. I can get it to sound perfect in idle but not so much at full throttle. maybe usable as is but I know I'm still missing something.... tomorrow I'll try adjusting the valves-- something I've never done before. I cleaned the air intake and I think the intake manifold is ok. Just still sounds sort of rough....
