Super M Work

I had some time yesterday to work on my 53 SM that I have been putting off. It had been missing and stalling out randomly when working hard and I would have to take the fuel line off and blow back into the tank to clear it out. I had already cleaned the sediment bowl and screen so was figuring there was rust in the tank. I was prepared to remove the tank but took a light and looked inside to find it really clean except for a piece of that tin looking flap / seal like whats on a bottle of HEET had gotten in there sometime in the distant past. It had to have been working its way over to the outlet and blocking it from time to time, fished it out with a chinese finger pick up tool. Lucky !? Time will tell if I ever get to cut hay, so wet here in Minnesota !
Next was a rusty rear rim ! The tube was starting to poke out so I was on borrowed time. Had to drain the ballast which I wont be refilling . I picked up a real nice used rim but it is an inch narrower than what I took off. I didn't realize that til the tire was off. The original is 12 inch from lip to lip and my new used one is 11. The old rim is pretty rusted by the valve but good everywhere else. I am thinking of patching it and redrilling the stem hole in another spot. That way the rims will match again. Any tips or advice on patching ? Is it worth the effort ?

You could definitely patch it, but that is in real bad spot being in the bead area and a decently long section. I would much rather find another rim. That one seems too far gone for a simple repair, although it could be done with reasonable effort. I have repaired several rotted rims from calcium but I would pass on that one, unless you just really can't find another.

You could always cut a section out of your other rim to repair it with but it may not be wide enough to repair all that where it is narrower.

Yeah only trouble is the bevel is different on the other wheel. I did find a better used one for $150. I guess I have nothing to loose but my time and some welding rod so I think I will try a repair.

The right side looks suspicious to me. I'd take a flat screwdriver and try to push it through those areas on the right. Might get a surprise.

It?s possible you can patch it but I wouldn?t trust it on something I use all the time

Should be able to find a used one that is good
Without a lot of trouble

Dont know where your at in mn but theres a guy by sleepy eye and by henderson that should have the right one for you. Maybe they would trade with you.

I have a rusty but reliable rim in that size here in central Iowa. If you are interested, let me know. I'm a few miles west of I 35 along US 30.

IMHO that rim is too far gone to repair. If it's that rusty there, there have got to be other areas that are not far behind.

The 11x38 will work if worse comes to worst, but hopefully you can find a 12x38 fairly easily. Even a new one should only set you back about $250, which I know seems like a lot, but the tractor is only worth about $250 on three wheels, so think of it as you've more than doubled its value.

Yeah I checked with him, he wants $150 and will not trade in my good 11 inch. I will probably end up buying it and selling the 11 on Craigs List.
