706 d282 idle/ throttle

I've had my 706 diesel for a few years now and never had much load on it as it is used for snow removal and loader work. But I will be using it in the close future to run pto attatchments and notice the fuel or throttle lever seems out of adjustment.

When i idle the tractor at around 800 rpm it is no where close to the idle pin (or what i assume is the idle pin). It is around 1/2" or more away. And if i crank the throttle it seems to want to rev higher then the tach indicates it should. I have never dared crank it all the way on the throttle for fear it is not being adjusted correctly.

With that said would it be best to try and readjust the whole linkage or is it possible the lever is just not on right?

Also i have never seen this tractor even haze the exhaust under load ( pushing snow or moving dirt) other then when it starts it smokes like any old diesel for a bit. Not that i want it indiscriminately dumping fuel.

Any thoughts?

The throttle "should be" touching the stop screw..
The screw on the throttle is JUST a stop screw, the real low idle adjustment
is on the top cover, allen screw. Back it OUT to lower the rpm, run it IN to raise.
IF you THINK its reving to hi, it probably is..
You can get a "hand held tach" off the internet.. or borrow 1 to check the RPM's
BUT, it sounds as if something in the pump is out of wack..

There should be no low idle stop screw on the throttle lever, as that tractor uses the throttle lever for shut down also. There will be a "dead spot" where no speed change happens, IF the linkage is set right. Low idle speed is set in the top cover, and with the throttle wide open the spring loaded lever should travel a bit further after the high speed stop makes contact. High idle no load speed should be 2300-2350 if I recall.

You SHOULD be able to move the throttle lever to the left, and stop against the RIGHT side of the pin for low idle. Lever is then lifted up and moved further left OVER the pin for engine to stop. There will be a "dead spot" range where moving the throttle that engine won't change speed on either side of the pin, AND at wide open throttle when the throttle high speed screw makes contact, and spring loaded lever "breaks over". Adjust the pump throttle rod as needed to make the lever work as described above. Low idle speed is the angled screw on the pump top cover, high speed stop screw is on the lever rear.

the very first 706s had a tachometer only. I remember the needle use to get up near the 2600 rpm mark. but we only ran the engine on the pto mark
under load . the IT manual states that low idle should be 650 rpm and the high idle no load should be 2500 rpm.
