Questions about International 574 problems

I have a few issues with my IH 574 regular gas:

1. At some points hydraulic fluid will spew from the steering column. It results in always having to refill the hydraulic fluid. I'm guessing it's a seal of some kind but how much of an in depth fix should I expect? It's my only tractor so I'd need to plan to not have one ahead of time

2. I've had overheating issues while baling. The radiator does circulate but eventually starts to overflow. I tried hosing down the radiator and then blowing it out which seemed to help a bit. Do I just need to keep cleaning it out? I was told I could try spraying it down with some soapy water and then hosing it out.

Over heating can be caused by a number of problems. Radiator clogged up by dirt and need to be hosed out like your trying. Or the cooling system it self is clogged up and need a good flushing and when I need to do that I drain it and fill it with vinegar and run it till good and warm and then back flush by way of the block drain. Or you may have a thermostat going bad

f the radiator is circulating would it still be clogged? When I start it I open the cap up and watch it circulate so I know it's working somewhat. And is there even a thermostat in that tractor?

#1 movement of coolant does not say the system is not clogged up because there can be a layer of lime./rust that holds the heat so it over heats. Or it could have the thermostat missing which can also cause it to over heat because the coolant is always moving so it does not have time to take on the heat and remove it to the radiator where it in turn gets cooled

If the oil leak is under the steering wheel it is an easy fix. Pull the wheel then with the snap ring below it out with the tractor runing truning the wheel should push your bushing and seal out. Then just with engine stopped put the bushing and seal back in with snap ring holding it all in. Reinstall steering wheel and should be fixed.
If it is leaking out the bottom and running all over the floor pans then you will have to remover the hand pump. Much more involved plan on a day to do that. It is also timed when you get the bottom apart to replace the Seal (vaccum cleaner belt) in there.

t seems to just be coming out the steering wheel/column but I'm not sure it's coming out of the actual wheel, it comes out more around where the steering column comes up through the "dashboard"

Is it just that big nut in the middle of the wheel that you use to take it off?

If it is like my IH584 you can take the steering wheel off but you cannot do any thing about the seal. My 584 has a power steering leak under the steering wheel but to fix that you need special tools and it will cost a good bit of $$

On your over heating issue,if you have good air flow thru the radiator, and the belt is tight,I would probably replace the thermostat. It is possible you have a blown head gasket leaking compression into cooling system, but you should see bubbles in the radiator if that is the case.
As far as the steering leak,if I'm not mistaken, there is an extension on the hand pump(the steering control under the dash),and the hydraulic oil will seep up this column and run out on the dash.I do not believe you can just change the seal on the tractor, and I think the whole hand pump has to removed, and disassembled to get to the seal. There is an outer dirt seal, and an inner pressure seal, and the pressure seal is the one leaking. It is very complicated to replace. I would probably try a new hand pump first.Mark.

fter giving the radiator a better soaking and cleaning it seems to be a bit better but might be too soon to tell.

As far as the hydraulic leak is, it seeps up onto the dash like you're describing but I can't see what's happening. Is the hand pump difficult to replace?

I just looked at the case/ih on line parts pictures.Your 574 is different from a 695,like I just replaced last week, or even a 584. It looks like it is possible to change the seal without completely disassembling the whole pump. On those tractors the seal is the last thing you get to when the pump is disassembled. But the 574 seems to have different style pump, where the seal comes out first.
The hand pump is not difficult to R&R,but it can be an all day job. Mark.
