Farmall C hard start

Put new pistons and sleeves in my C. Engine runs well but I have to crank start it. The Delco starter motor will not turn it over. Tried another working starter from a Farmall M using a plug-in battery charger/starter at 12 volts. The M starter struggled and just barely turned over the engine, certainly not fast enough to start. Could my rod and main bearings be too tight? Would you pull the oil pan and adjust or break-in the engine for awhile to see if things loosen? Thanks, Randy.

New sleeves and pistons arn't going to make it that tight, are u sure something else didnt go wrong, did u line bore the block or something on the bottom end ??

When new, it will take a good battery, and starter to make it start well. A 12v booster charger will not put out crank volts, (which might be 250 amps) it will assist a low battery for starting. Fat cables (O gauge) and clean connections. Jim

Despite the pain, I would go check the bottom end again. Ideally you'd spin the crank by hand with the pistons out (just mains). It should roll smoothly over.

I personally don't think break-in is a good idea, you could easily spin a bearing when it gets hot and oil pressure drops.

It doesn't take a lot of any crud behind a bearing shell to make it drag. You might have visible marks already in one of the shells from the contact that will lead you to the problem.

If you can hand crank it, the motor is not too tight. I would guess bad battery. Did I understand you applied 12 volts to the 6 volt starter without success? If the timing is too far advanced the hand crank could be prone to kick back. Be careful.

I agree with 47 five window. If you can start it by hand, there is most likely nothing wrong with motor. Something is wrong between battery and starter. It is not starter since you ruled that out. Most likely battery or connections, or switch.

My apologies, I missed the part where you have to hand crank start the engine. For some unexplainable reason I was thinking you had to pull-start with another tractor.......

I take back my advice to look at the bottom end of the engine, and instead look at the starter motor and wiring as others have suggested..

Problem was my electrical connections, probably my ground. I replaced my ground strap with 0/1 gauge cable, shined up the ground bolt and bolt hole where it fastens to the chassis, and chased the bolt hole (it was filled with dirt). Engine spins nicely now. Thanks for the suggestions.
