Farmall M Sleeves

After browsing the forum I have found that some people like to use oil or grease when installing sleeves and some people like to stick the sleeves in dry what the general consensus on this? What do you think is better I don?t mind using oil or grease but I don?t want the sleeve to try to slide down after it?s together and I don?t want to not use oil or some substance and have the sleeve rust in place and be hard to change out later.

I always put my engine dry sleeves in the freezer overnight and install them directly from freezer. I make sure that the engine bore is clean and dry. After installing the sleeves I coat them with oil to prevent any rust from forming.

proper is dry. cant rust when the sleeves and pistons are bathed in oil. if the sleeve is that loose that it will slide you have a problem.

I do the same trick of putting the sleeves in the freezer overnight and a 100 watt light bulb into each bore overnight. The sleeves will push in by hand when done this one, but you have to be quick or the heat is drawn into the sleeve and it will stop and then you have to finish by pressing them in. I have also seen someone drop the sleeve into the bore and it hit the bottom and then bounce back up about an inch and stick when done this way. It's not too bad to finish pressing them in this last little bit if it does stick. You just need to have a big press or get creative with a bottle jack a piece of square tube and a chain or some other way to secure it to the block. It's much better than the wooden block and hammer method.

Just make sure the bore is clean. Would not hurt to run a hone up and down to clean out the crud in there. If you do this plus freeze them overnight they should slide right in with minimal effort
