Farmall 656 Stalling

Dethington

New User
We've only got 15 acres and don't use the tractor very often, not for row crops, mostly for moving things.
Recently had tractor serviced including carburetor kit. Used a little since then, but now: Starts fine and runs for 5 or six minutes and then stalls to die. And it will start right back up, and then die again in another five minutes. I'm confused.

Any ideas??

Do some simple trouble shooting.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire of the distributor cap and at all the plugs that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more
#2 pull the carb drain plug and see if you get a good steady flow of gas that will fil a pint jar in less then 3 minutes. If it has a fuel pump this may not work
#3 when was the last time you service the air cleaner.

Sounds like a fuel related problem, tractor runs until lines and carb are empty, sits for a while and slowly seeps back into lines and carb.
Check tank for crud, screens and any fuel filters.

In case you don?t know, the fitting screwed in the carb where the fuel line attachs has a screen in it. If the sediment bowl screen has been eliminated the small screen in that carb fitting has to catch all the crud. It was likely cleaned during the carb rebuild, but that doesn?t mean there wasn?t a bunch of crud that came down the line after the carb was reinstalled. Also those tractors have a fuel shut of solenoid on the bottom of the carb. There is a slim possibility that the electromagnetic coil is failing and then pulls open again after cooling. Also check for constant 12v to it.

If the carb has a hex head or square head - drain plug on it, I like to pull that out and left fuel run into a clean can (tin can, glass jar, etc). The flow should be steady, if its dribbly or the stream ever stops there's something wrong in the tank, fuel line, sediment bowl screen, or sediment bowl valve-body. As mentioned above it could be the strainer screen where the fuel pipe connects to the carb body. My grandpa's SMTA had an impressive amount of gum in all of the above for sitting around for ~20 years without running. It took awhile to restore order.

The fuel you drain out can be recycled and just poured back into the tank, I recommend doing this outside.

If the plug is boogered up, you have a "homework assignment" to source a new one :D
