International 484 questions.

A very good friend just picked up a 3 cylinder 484 with a bad injection pump.
Don't think it can be repaired.
Anyone know where to find one?
He also wants to know what other engines he might be able to put in as a replacement.

That engine should have a Bosch VA pump unless it has been converted to a Bosch VE pump. The VA is somewhat difficult to get internal parts for and that has driven the price up of good pumps. You could do the conversion to the VE pump, which is a more "modern" pump and is still used today on some emission exempt engines.
Either way it isn't going to be cheap, unless you can find a known good, used pump. Replacement pumps for that engine are going to tun $1,600 and up.

What is supposed to be wrong with the pump? Might be worth a look before it's condemned to the scrap heap. If it's set awhile it might just need a good cleaning and reseal. Recently did need to install and ream to size the drive shaft bushings on a VA pump, worked fine on the test bench after a complete tear down and reseal..

Hi Richard,
484 has the 3 cyl German D-179 used in many applications such as 454, 464, 484, 495, 3220 and many other industrial models.
There were 3 models of Bosch injection pumps used: older 454/464 had VA-BR and newer 484 had VA-CR and 495 and newer had VE pumps.
The VA-BR and VA-CR have the STOP/START/RUN and Throttle controls on the side. The VA-BR and VA-CR have different injector pipe connections on the rear of the pump. The VE pump has the STOP/RUN and throttle controls are on top of the pump.

I hope I am correct but I am sure one of the pump experts on this site will supply the correct information.
