Brake shaft on a M

Two questions - can the old shaft be removed without removing the top of the transmission and does the oil need to be drained fist.

The shaft will slide out of the rear casting, once you remove the pedals and a key on one side of the shaft or the other to allow it to pass through. I have never had to drain one to remove the shaft and I don't think you should either unless it is just overfull.

I agree with rustred, look at the level of the check plug and compare it to the level of the pedal shaft. Lube is above the brake shaft, drain it first way less mess. I am pretty sure there is nothing inside that keeps the shaft from sliding out so access from the top isn?t needed.

As for removing shaft yes it will slide out by removing outside pedals and such. There is nothing attached inside transmission. If your tires are close together you will possibly have to remove one to slide shaft out.

The level check plug in mine is below the pedal shaft. There is also no seal for that shaft, so it would leak all the time if you kept it filled above that level.

Pretty sure mine had seals.

it looks like they should have seals according parts diagram. I've had a few apart and no fluid ever came out and the seals seemes non-existant.

Seal in housing on both sides. If the flat washer sticks in the seal hole you mite miss seeing the seals if not trying to find.

Not sure why your removing the shaft but I I have taken a few out ..and If your replacing it for some reason don't throw it away...I allways take the shafts and cut the down in about 6" pieces and use them for Pins in my loaders ect..they are nice and hard and saves me alot of money ...
