Farmall Regular

Hey all, have a 32 regular that has two valves that won't close completely. The adjustment is out completely on the rockers, but the valves are still slightly open. As far as I can tell, there is nothing between the push rod and the lifters. Growing frustrations with no more ideas. Thanks in advance for any help.

Are the lifter stuck in the up position so the push rods can't come completely down for the valves? Are the valves coming completely up to the seats or stuck part way due to a build up on the stems.

I dont know your system but i've had pretty good luck with marvel mystery oil in resolving stuck valve issues without disassembly work. Some flatheads (valve in block) seem to have trouble splash-oiling the stem+ guides. As mentioned, buildup on the stem could do it also.

Lifter stuck or not get full travel, Wrong push rods or wrong valves if either is longer than the others. Have seen rockers bent but that would let valve close but you would not get correct adjustment. PB and lots of taping up and down to free up if stuck.

I would agree with the lifters may be sticking or have a bunch of crud down in the bore. Penetrating oil and tapping on the pushrod or sticking a blow gun down to blow the crud out.

My dad would lift valve cover off while engine running and spray Liquid Wrench around the rods and valves and then pry on the springs somehow with a big screwdriver and before long it was running as smooth as new. Sorry I don't remember the precise method but what he did worked.

MY guess is you have crud down inside of the lifters. Same thing happened to my F-20, even after I pressure washed the HECK out of the block, using oven cleaner, etc. Inside and out, at every angle... I still had crud in them.. The lifters are like an upside-down cup, and just when you think you have all the crud out of them, more comes out. What I did was take a piece of 1/4" round rod and ground a "scoop" into the end of it so that I could feed it down into the lifters and scrape/scoop the crap out of it. Eventually, after a lot of patience and scraping, I was able to get the push rods to give me that nice "tick" sound when dropped into the lifters.. You will know that metal on metal sound when they are cleaned out.... A LONG, dull drill bit might work, just don't press on it otherwise you will drill into the lifter. You would be surprised how something so minuscule can cause such a headache.

What boberjagel said, the valves are sticking. If they sit awhile this can happen, especially on
a dandy set of valves and guides, I wouldn't scrap a good tractor like that. After they loosten up run it awhile.
