The 412 is a fast hitch semi mounted plow. The 540 is a semi mounted steerable fast hitch plow. Type ihc 412 plow into the browser and a pic will come up. Or type 540

(quoted from post at 14:10:39 06/21/18) What is the main difference between a 412 and a 540ih plows?

The 412 is strictly a 2-pt. plow. It has a 12" fully-castering tail wheel. It was available either with a bracket that mounted on the tractor lift arm and a chain that connected to a pipe that went back to control the tail wheel, or a hydraulic cylinder that mounted to the rear of the plow to do the same. If your tractor has a 2pt. hitch, but no additional remote valves, or you use the other valve(s) for other things, you can use the style of plow with the arm/chain combo.

The 540 can be used with either a 2pt. or a 3pt. hitch. It has a larger (14-15-16", don't remember offhand) tail wheel that mounts on a bit of an angle, controlled with a cylinder and by a tube that is connected to the hitch that steers it. The 540 had a hydraulic sliding hitch and a dummy 3rd. link hitch-limiter available. Dad had an on-land hitche on his 6-bottom 560 plow, too.

Both the 412 and 540 "semi-mounted" 4-bottom plows. Both had a variety of bottoms and coulters/jointers available. I think trash clearance is the same or pretty close to the same with both models.
