3rd try-water pump 350u

How test water pump?

Nope...when running the engine there is no water coming out of the upper outlet (the one to the radiator tank) even though the block was full of water right up to point where it was trickling out of the upper outlet. Regardless of what the specific problem might be, does this sound like the water pump has failed? This site has an impeller but no shaft so any ideas are appreciated! Thanks...

Can you show a pic of the front of the fan hub?

As I recall, there are two pins and a cross-bar of sorts that connects the hub to the impeller shaft, that's supposed to be on the front of the hub.

If some or all of those pieces are missing, the fan hub will spin like everything's peachy but the impeller that actually moves the water is just sitting there.

Have you had the pump off?
Wondering if the impeller isn't tight on the shaft.

Otherwise, the thermostat being perfectly sealed, wouldn't
let water circulate to the radiator until warmed up.
The pump circulates through the engine & head until the
'stat opens.

Haven't had the pump off but did have the fan, hardware and tapered lock bolt off and the impeller SHAFT turns freely. When I turn on the hose from the COLD well water it flows right on up and out the right angle neck on top, past the thermostat.....if there is one. I guess there would NOT be a thermostat there if there's a positive flow of cold water up from the bottom coolant inlet of the engine on through a cold engine. Do these impellers wear enough over the years to fail to move any coolant? Is it wear?

Pulled the pump: thermostat spring was broken off from lower rivet so it allowed water to just push up past the seat. Impeller is firmly on the shaft so when I turn the fan the impeller turns fine. So.....maybe the impeller has to be moving at engine speed to move coolant?faster than finger-on-the-fan speed? No clearance value for the impeller end play is given in the service manual but I'll see if it is rubbing.

The pump is centrifugal, and not positive displacement. So, based on that my opiniion is that it has to be at least idle speed. Depending on access you might be able to spin it with a cordless drill...
