one of my friends , dropped a piece of metal down into the oil filler hole. a piece broke. i looked at it and recommended to pull distributor out, perhaps, then the metal part can be seen. he has pulled oil pan.
suggestions?

there is a screen in the oil filler, so how can that be? what has the distributer got to do with that? what piece broke?

Curious what type piece of metal. What would fall through screen on oil filler?

I can't see how distributor access would help. You would also have to remove hydraulic pump to even see that small area.

Oil pan removal probably would help. Would have to remove pulley, radiator, front timing cover to find metal.

there is not screen. the cast piece that held the bolt, for the lid, was broken and the bolt was no longer held in place. prior owner , jury rigged a part

it seems that if the distributor were removed, then the piece may be seen. there is no screen now. the distributor removed, may allow removal of the fallen part or perhaps allow the part to be seen. hmmm.

Probably the best bet short of pulling the front cover is to take out the ignition drive housing or hydraulic pump if engine driven and see. Maybe it can be spotted. Change was made in front covers and if I remember correct some SM still had the screen that you would see straight ahead through opening after the ignition drive is removed and two small bolts mounting the screen. Could probably look and see what type it is if the front cover casting number and suffix on it was posted. Loose piece can get in unwanted places in there without making it to bottom.
