Farmall 656 won't move

While mowing with my 656 this past Saturday I backed up to turn around and when I went back to second gear the tractor would nor move. It made no strange sounds or anything Tractor still runs, all hydraulics still work, just will not move in any direction. The torque amplifier handle seems like it has no resistance. Does anyone have any ideas where to start?

thanks in advance
Dave

See if the levers are binding that are down where the TA and clutch linkages converge on the left
side of the trans. When you push the clutch two fingers bump together and shift the TA to the low
side for better shifting. Does the TA work on this tractor and do you use it frequently? Answer this
and I?ll check back here tonight. I had a longer reply with some parts diagram links attached but I
fat fingered something on my phone and It went away. Can?t redo it now have to get back to work.

Well, start by disconnecting the mower and dragging the tractor up to somewhere where you can work on it. Preferably in a shed or barn out of the rain, preferably on concrete, preferably near tools. Trying to fix it way out away from what you need is just going to be frustrating and counterproductive.

Under the gas tank on top of the TA housing is one or two inspection covers. On older tractors there were two IIRC. The second one might be under the steering pedestal on a 656. Front one grants you visibility to the TA clutch, which will tell you the condition of the TA clutch and whether power is getting from the engine to the TA, and thereby to the transmission.

A theory I'm formulating right now is something 'sploded in or around the TA clutch. This would explain the lack of resistance when you pull the TA lever.

I have been seeing this spline coupling that connect the clutch output shaft to the TA input sun gear showing up with splines that are wore out. but that would not explain the lack of resistance to the TA handle. On the 656 it's a little harder to remove the inspection cover over the TA clutch but that is where I would start. No mater what you find the tractor would have to be split for repairs.
Here is a picture of the drive shaft and coupling just about gone.

Not sure as it did'nt make any noises. the t/a lever feels like no resistance or should I say very little. Looks like she is ready for a split.
How difficult would a split be?

With the proper tools, I would not say it is difficult, but it is a lot of work. A good set of splitting stands will make the job much easier, as well as a hoist to lift the torque housing and even better a torque housing stand to support the Torque housing once removed from the rear, making it easier to work on.
I have done the job with much less and just wrestled with the Torque housing on the floor swapping out the components though.
Safety-wise, I would say get, ,make or borrow a set of splittings stands and a way to hold the torque up while working on it (modified engine stand).

thank you for the heads up. I borrowed some homemade stands that I can modify and an engine crane so I guess it's time to get wrenching
