Stage 2 Super M Update 2

I picked it up yesterday and drove it an hour home - so far I like it! I did top off all fluids prior to hitting the road, and adjusted the
clutch throw as it was a little out of spec.. The trans was over 2 gallons low (I only had 2 with me).. But even with that added the clutch
seemed to operate MUCH better. I am thinking the fluid was just too low for it to cause drag on the input shaft and gear sets, and it
essentially was freewheeling inside the bearings. A little more fluid and I am anticipating very little issue with it - the fluid should
probably be replaced. The clutch pedal should have the pivot bushing replaced as well. IT has significant side to side wobble - enough to
allow the pedal to drift to the side and past the casted corner of the operators platform.

About a mile into the venture, I did have the right brake stick on me, but I think it was due to the amount of rust inside the housing. I
did get it freed up by going forward and backward a short distance to get it loosened, but the rusty dust that was coming out was a sure
sign that things probably just need to be taken apart and cleaned out. The tractor did sit for 12 years, so I am sure there is plenty of
surface rust in the housings as well as on the discs.

Carburetor issue was hunting at idle. Prior to leaving with the tractor, I removed the idle mixture screw and gave it a flood of carburetor
cleaner into the circuit. Added about 7 gallons of fresh fuel with sea foam, and about a gallon or so of diesel just to lubricate things.
Set the idle screw to 1 1/2 turns out, and headed for home. Still had a hunting issue at idle when I got home so I decided to try to adjust
the idle mixture and set the speed. WOW. Got it dialed right in and it idles BEAUTIFULLY. Looks like this purchase was a smart one after
all. I'm anticipating that the front seals on the trans are probably going, as the belly cover has a bit of dried fluid and dirt on it...
But, I can honestly say I am a happy buyer... Took a photo of her parked next to the '47 M. She looks to be right at home.

Really want to keep both tractors, but told the wife the M would be hitting the road. It would be nice to do a full resto on the M (maybe
even pull it at the show), and use the Super M as my workhorse... We will see. Maybe I can talk her into it... :-D... Stay tuned. Videos to
come!!

Ken looks like you found a nice one. A lot of wear in the clutch pivot does suggest it has been well ...field tested.. Maybe you already knew this and just misspoke. I?m pretty certain the clutch pedal does not have a bushing from the factory. Just a cast bore riding right on the cross shaft. A good machinist can bore it and fit it with a bushing. Hope I?m right on this. I probably should have checked the online parts diagram before spouting off.

While I say this completely in jest and would never recommend you do such a thing, if you drag your feet long enough and make enough excuses, Mrs Christopherson may well forget that she said you had to get rid of the M.

No, I am pretty sure you are right on the clutch pedal. I was kind of on the same thought as you.. Bore and bush the pedal, maybe have to turn the pivot shaft in a lathe if it is too worn...

I thought it had been well used on the farm field as well, but to my surprise the drawbar barely has any wear to the hole, which I thought odd. Maybe someone with really short legs was operating the clutch, and instead of pushing it straight they constantly pushed it at an angle, causing excess side to side wear. It does have the "EZ Push" clutch arm extension, so it is a possibility.

Well, we have officially been married 1 month and 1 day today... I don't want to push my luck so early on! But, I won't say that this hasn't
crossed my mind! :-D

Sounds good, if it ever quits raining I will get around to it! I haven't cut the grass in about 10 days... If it gets any longer someone will have to bring over their sickle, rake, and baler!

Just put it on CL for sale for $3000.00.You wont get many calls (but that is the idea right?)

push your luck now cause the longer you're married the less lucky you may feel! just kidding and I hope that's not the case

So far it has been real good. We have been together 5 years, so it isn't anything new at this point... I'm just hoping she still keeps an open mind about the tractors!

Ken looks good. can you maby buy miss ken off and let her buy a new living room set or some thing ? it,s worked for me more then once. good luck . Bob
