I picked it up yesterday and drove it an hour home - so far I like it! I did top off all fluids prior to hitting the road, and adjusted the
clutch throw as it was a little out of spec.. The trans was over 2 gallons low (I only had 2 with me).. But even with that added the clutch
seemed to operate MUCH better. I am thinking the fluid was just too low for it to cause drag on the input shaft and gear sets, and it
essentially was freewheeling inside the bearings. A little more fluid and I am anticipating very little issue with it - the fluid should
probably be replaced. The clutch pedal should have the pivot bushing replaced as well. IT has significant side to side wobble - enough to
allow the pedal to drift to the side and past the casted corner of the operators platform.
About a mile into the venture, I did have the right brake stick on me, but I think it was due to the amount of rust inside the housing. I
did get it freed up by going forward and backward a short distance to get it loosened, but the rusty dust that was coming out was a sure
sign that things probably just need to be taken apart and cleaned out. The tractor did sit for 12 years, so I am sure there is plenty of
surface rust in the housings as well as on the discs.
Carburetor issue was hunting at idle. Prior to leaving with the tractor, I removed the idle mixture screw and gave it a flood of carburetor
cleaner into the circuit. Added about 7 gallons of fresh fuel with sea foam, and about a gallon or so of diesel just to lubricate things.
Set the idle screw to 1 1/2 turns out, and headed for home. Still had a hunting issue at idle when I got home so I decided to try to adjust
the idle mixture and set the speed. WOW. Got it dialed right in and it idles BEAUTIFULLY. Looks like this purchase was a smart one after
all. I'm anticipating that the front seals on the trans are probably going, as the belly cover has a bit of dried fluid and dirt on it...
But, I can honestly say I am a happy buyer... Took a photo of her parked next to the '47 M. She looks to be right at home.
Really want to keep both tractors, but told the wife the M would be hitting the road. It would be nice to do a full resto on the M (maybe
even pull it at the show), and use the Super M as my workhorse... We will see. Maybe I can talk her into it... :-D... Stay tuned. Videos to
come!!
