SMTA not starting

This is one for the record books. SMTA with a 6 volt positive ground electronic ignition kit. It died on me the other day and I didn't have a chance to look
at it until this afternoon. I fiddled with it and put in another ignition kit that I had from another tractor. Nothing worked. I noticed that when I cranked
it the meter did not show discharge. I wondered if the meter was bad so I hit the light switch to see if it would discharge and it fired right up. The kill
switch has no effect. Turn the lights off and it stops. Tomorrow I will try to figure it out. What happened. Ellis

I would get behind the "dash" and look for loose wires, rubbed-thru wires, foreign material, or other obvious signs of damage.

It would appear that somehow one of the push-pull switch's connections was compromised to + or - (so it cannot complete the circuit), and the lighting switch instead supplied the missing pathway to complete the circuit.

That's quite ironic as I know of another SMTA (not mine) that has the same symptoms some times. It's like a ghost story!!

The meter (assuming you mean ammeter) should not show discharge during cranking as starter current does not go through the ammeter. Normal ignition current would be barely visible on ammeter during cranking. That leads me to believe that maybe you have been seeing a heavy discharge on ammeter during cranking which, if so, certainly points to some serious wiring errors or faults.

(quoted from post at 20:52:15 06/18/18) Should I buy a new light switch and kill switch??? Ellis

Throwing parts at it is not the answer, could just be wiring or grounding issues.

Sounds like you have a bad ground in the dash. Remove the dash from the post and clean surfaces, also clean the back of dash cover where it goes on the housing. You can also use star lockwashers under the long screws that hold the cover to the housing.
