I bought a super m farmall today starts and runs good, but the man said about two years ago he was using it and stopped it to go eat lunch. Came back and started it put into gear and it will not go, and when you put it back in neutral it make a grinding noise a little. after I got it home today I pulled it to shop. I also put it in gear and the fan don't turn. Than I put pto in gear and it turns freely ingaged or not. What do I need to look for. help please. Thank you

M farmalls have a simple gear selection system. there is a selector rod going into the trans from the pivot of the shifter. On the bottom of this is a flat plate with rounded bottom edges that fits into slots. The slots allow selection of gears R and 1st on the left (shifter knob position) then 2 and 3, then to the right 4 and 5. R,2,4 toward the front, and 1 3 5 toward the rear. In the trans cover, the rod and plate/tip travel opposite of these directions. When in neutral, the slots are all lined up. when a slot is moved, it moves a shift rail that moves an attached shift fork to slide a gear on a shaft. Taking the shifter out requires removing two metal plugs just below the spring loaded cuff on the lever. They are welsh plugs, and one needs to be removed with a screw and slide hammer, the other can be punched out with the pivot pin in the shift tower. When the shifter is out, you can see in the hole and check alignment. There are springs and balls that locate the rails/gears. If these are not in alignment, they need to be. jacking up and blocking one wheel so it can turn makes checking things easy. If the belt pulley seems to not work and grind, it can be taken off to look. they can fail and have teeth missing and other nasty stuff. A plate can be made or found to cover the hole. Jim
