How could this happen??

I bought an M several years ago, and I've never used it as much as I could because it steered harder than you'd expect.

I thought the U joint in the steering shaft from the steering wheel to the gearbox might be binding, so I pulled the hood few days ago. The U joint was OK, but the upright arm that holds the bracket with the bushing that the shaft goes through had been broken sometime in the past and someone had done a botched up welding job on it. The weld was cracked again, and the whole thing was out of kilter to where the bushing was seriously binding on the steering shaft.

I put some auto body shims in the bracket so the bushing was aligned better and it steered much, much better. I then went up to Northeast Tractor Salvage in Lyons, Nebraska and got a whole different casting for $75. Which is today's project.

I still can't figure out how that casting could have broke in the first place, short of an accident of some sort.

I had to have been an accident of some sort, but the rest of the area doesn't show any signs of having been damaged.

looks like it might have been a week spot in that area, if there are other tractors with the same problem in the same spot , i would say thats a week spot , broke maybe from vibration , who no's

I have seen 2 one in a scrap yard, the other one i did, fell off trailer on hwy. She rolled. I just posted my story on here last wknd! Lol

If they ever had one of the IH 30 loader, and were getting it lined up to mount it, they could have hit the loader's cross bar and broke it. I have seen several broke this way.
