Farmall Cub coil

I?m working on this cub doing a tune up, hasn?t run in 10 years the customer says. I noticed a large crack in the ignition coil, is this a sure sign it is no good or can I use the cracked one? If I need a replacement would a local NAPA be able to get a quality replacement? Thank you for any replies.

Crack means the coil got real hot and instead of exploding it cracked but either way it is bad or will be shortly. I had one on VW years ago and I forgot to turn the key off. My dad was walking by it when it exploded and he said it sounded like a shot gun going off. Big mess of oil and piece of wire under the hood. As for NAPA having one yes but you will need to be sure to ask for the correct one. If it is 12 volts with a ballast resister you need to either get rid of the ballast resister and by a true 12 volt coil that says not resister needed

That's an IH "J-4" magneto, and the cracked part (Key #20)is the "coil cover", NOT the actual coil (Key #22), which is a separate part beneath it. Surprised a couple of others who have replied didn't know that!

Still available through the FIAT/dba CASEIH dealer, OH, and even THIS very site, for about $50, part #251502R11.

If the customer is willing, I'd replace it.

On the other hand, if the mag is working, one could clean up the cap and "V" out the cracks a little and seal it with some epoxy to keep moisture and dust out.

Would probably work for a long time.

The cover is cracked that doesent mean the coil is bad becaus of the cover beiing cracked. Remove the cover and relace coi8l is probably just fine. Just remove the mag and send it out for a check-up by someone who knows what they are doing.
