Cotton left in the field

There has been some comments about the amount of cotton left in the field after the cotton picker goes through. I was at RPRU and sat in some on the work shops. They said the best picking will get about 95% of the cotton. As I listened to this I thought about our field lost in corn and soybeans. There is a certain amount of field loss there too. One of the speakers comments was to take your cap off and see how long it would take to fill it with cotton that was left in the field.

Back when I was a kid up in Leigh NE as a school fund raiser we walked one of the church member corn field picking up corn that the picker had missed and we picked up 2 or 3 wagon loads. That was also the very first time I got to drive a tractor. Not really sure what tractor it was other then red but most likely an H or Super H or M

Sure was neat to see the old pickers working this week. We spent all day at rpru today. Tons more tractors today than Wed. The new pickers leave less in the field. But they still miss some.

I think it was 1955 or 56 we had a lot of ear's of corn on the ground due to high wind, maybe insect's too, but the school band would come out and pick up the corn on a 1/2 share, my older sisters signed my dads farm up for it, but guess there was to much, they never got to it!!

Field loss is also an economic thing. Sure you could go slower and get more, but is the added time and fuel to get that extra little bit paying off?

In larger operations it can mean additional machines and operators to get over all the acres planted, which then also means more machines and people sitting idle and costing money on rainy days.

I have noticed that in Georgia and southern Missouri, cotton is mowed, rolled into big round bales, and taken to a plant to separate the cotton from the stems.
I have seen several cotton pickers rusting away in southern Georgia.

Out here in West Tx there is being more picked and rolled and wrapped with one machine. 4 rolls make a module. Hauled with module trucks. Wagons and mounted pickers have all gone to scrap. We are dusting in cotton rite now maybe itll rain enough to get to sprout.
