Super H brakes

The seal around the brake shaft on both of my brakes are leaking. Can the seals be removed without prying that plate off.

That is not a plate. That is the bull pinion carrier. It goes a ways inside the tractor and holds the bearings for the bull pinion, the little gear that drives the big gear (bull gear) that turns the axle.

On a regular H, if you tried to pry it out, you would break it.

On a Super H, I'm not sure. I've heard both ways.

To get the bull pinion carrier out of an H, you would need to remove the PTO, reach in, unbolt the bull gear from the axle, slide the axle out of the bull gear, and roll the bull gear back first.

Not sure about installing new seals without pulling these carriers.

The plate (actually the bull pinion shaft retainer) is easily removed.

Clean the OD thoroughly then look around backside for 4(?) equally spaced slots. Using a screwdriver or chisel, gently work it into the slots - the plate should slide off easily. The shaft seal is inside the "nose" part of the assembly. Once the plate is off seal is easily replaced.

While it's off, check the O-ring seal around the OD of the nose on retainer - replace if damaged.

I have never replaced the bull pinion seals on a Super H. Have done three standard H's and a Super W6(with disk brakes). You do not need to remove the bull pinion carriers to replace the seals. They are a real pain in the rear to get out though. The seal assembly is about 1/2" thick and in comprised of two lip seals held together with a sheet metal outer ring. The seals are going to come out and a lot of really sharp pieces. I have used: a seal puller, vice grips, small chisels and a hammer to get them out. Its easier to do if you don't have the wheels on the tractor, but it can be done. When you replace them put in two seals on each side there is plenty of room. Take your time and stock up on band-aids......

Not necessary! The bull pinion carrier (and bull pinion) stay place.

Only the outer shaft retainer (where the seal mounts) needs to be removed. When I replaced the seals my Super H the retainer on both sides slid out easily.

Seal comes out on bull pinion side. Housing on right stays in, Plate or pinion gear can come out if wanted after brake cover and brake parts removed.
