I got a M with a Delco upright dist, but i need to take off the oil filter to get at that back cover, and it doesn't need a oil change, now, but what in there to stick, the advance part of it? Is that common?

In the bottom compartment there is only two bevel gears. The advance parts are under the breaker plate inside the distributor. Remove the points, condenser, the cap clips and any other screws around the outside of the distributor holding the breaker plate. Lift the plate straight up and out. Now you should be able to see the advance weights and springs.

Think they have another cover or weight guard over the weights and springs after the breaker plate is removed. If it has the distributor I think. Find the distributor number and think you should be able to look on a allis chamers parts book website and find a parts breakdown.

Measure how deep the distributor is ion the inside then measure how deep it is on the out side. If those match then some one may have taken the advance parts out. If they do not match good chance there is another cover you need to remove
