SMTA backfire button OFF

Hello all,

Working on the SMTA carb today, I had it in the carb cleaner can for another round of cleaning.

I discovered the brass button for what I think is the anti-backfire poppet valve in the bottom elbow of the carb, under a lot of gunk.

The rest of the assembly is missing, I think its a pin/rivet, spring, maybe another button.

Looking for your guidance, are these a CIH part I should get from the dealer, in a standard carb rebuild kit, or just run it as-is? (I have had the engine running roughly last fall, on this tractor, so I know it will work without, but feel like eventually when I need the choke its vacuum is going to be compromised by the open cross-section) Thanks!

Most of the "premium car rebuild kits" come with both the throttle and choke plate, as shown in the picture from steiners rebuild kit #IHS3323.

For what it is worth, that is not a backfire button. It is a device to keep the operator from flooding the engine when using the choke.

If it is like my SMTA it rarely needs to be choked, even in cold weather it is easy to overchoke and flood it. that being said I don't think that plate is going to do much for you

that is so the engine can keep running puffing black smoke till the choke is opened. comes in handy when hand cranking.
