Super H PTO Oil Seal Assembly Debate

I am having a bit of a debate with a friend of mine about which direction to drive the oil seals out of my Super H PTO Seal Retainer assembly.

From the front or from the back?

My thanks.

I bought that seal bet it was 10-12 years ago, got the seal & gasket for the transmission input shaft and both rear axles. Replaced the input shaft seal right away, did the first rear axle seal, felt, and cap gasket a year or two later. Did the other side 5 yrs ago.

All the seals I've replaced have been REAL rawhide leather seals, Chicago Rawhide brand. They sure are hard on the shafts.

Smooth bore,or does it have a lip? Smooth bore, doesnt matter. A lip,Push away from the lip.Install, push it in from the 'solid' side.

If you measure the "Outside" seal bore in the casting, and then the "inside" hole in the casting, the outside will be bigger. Drive it toward bigger (inside to out) Jim

I replaced mine by driving a screw in and pulling it with a slide hammer while the retainer was still on the tractor, so it came out the outside.

As I recall there was a lip on the inside.

I don't understand the point of the debate. Get a socket and a hammer and try driving the seal out. It will go one way, but it won't go the other way. It's not rocket surgery. Fix it and move on.

BTW, the new seal is only half as wide as the original. If it bothers you, you can install two seals, but I just tapped mine in flush with the outside. Problem solved.

The debate emanated from an Electrical Engineer (me) and a friend (Mechanical Engineer). From now on, I am going to depend upon a Barnyard Engineer (you).

Thank you for your advice and encouragement.
