Broke the sickle bar bar on my A-16

I was almost done wit hone field when all at once the sickle bar it self broke. Broke right under the ball part of the bar at one of the rivet/bolt holes. I do have a couple of other old bars on hand so I think I can cut one of them down to size and be back up pretty quickly. I was thinking as I was out cutting hay that is was odd that I had not had any trouble so far this year. Guess I should not have had that thought. When it first happened I had thought I might be able to weld it but since I have 3 or more other bars laying around I think I would be better off just to replace it

I'd probably go ahead and weld the broken one back up and keep it for a spare anyway. Sometimes you need a part and can't find it right away. It's nice to have a backup spare.

I'll probably take the broken one and tape or wire the parts together and set it with the other sickle bars I have laying around. That way if I need it or parts of it I'll have it where I can find it pretty easy. I know no days every time I look in my scrap iron pile and I find one I pull it out and set it in my bar pile

Yes but why buy new when you have stuff laying around to fix it and the cost that way is pretty much the time it take to fix it

Dad tried welding a broken sickle years and years ago. Made less than a round before it broke again. Put the parts in your scrap pile to be recycled. One of the very few things Dad didn't have success welding.

I have welded many of them and had them hold up just fine. But in this case it was faster and easier to just put in a different bar that I had. I'll weld this one up and keep it as a spare

As I just told him they can in fact be welded and I have done many in the past. But this time it was faster and easier to just put on a different bar. I WILL be welding this one up and setting it aside as a spare

A welded sickle doesn’t last long. A brazed sickle lasts slightly longer. A welded cutter bar the sickle runs in can last as long as a new one. I think Rich is talking about the cutter bar.

Yeah- I've found that welds don't last too long on those too.

I think by the time they break, the metal is so fatigued all over that it's a lost cause.

Worth trying, but don't be surprised if it snaps again.

Yep bar broke that has the sickle section on it. Broke about 3 inch for the pitman end. So yesterday I welded the bar and drilled a new hole since it broke at the rivet hole. Then I welded the pitman stick bar where it broke which was 7 or so inches from the end and drilled that hole out. Only thing left to do is put in the bolts that I do not have on hand so need to get to town before it is done. bolted it together then ground a V in each broken area and welded the break. That way I know it is straight and close to being the same length. I have repaired more then one by welding and they have held up
