Farmall 400 trans gaskets? TA gasket?

Needing to change out the two gaskets on the bottom of the transmission with TA on my 400. I have all the fluid out and the plate off that’s got the drain in it but the plate that has alittle slotted lever and is the shape of a T won’t come off? I have all the bolts out but I’d like to know how to get that plate off the gasket is leaking very bad Do I have to take the set bolt out of that plate and slide it forward or backward to get the whole plate to drop down? Am I gonna get anything out of adjustment? And then what fluid should I put back in the trans? It had gear oil in it I think

Is the trans/rearend and TA all the same fluid? Will 303 hydraulic transmission fluid work? I’m tired of seeing all tons of different answers of additives and two people arguing on what to use

303 tells me you plan to use a Deere spec cheaper oil. Deere never sold a Torque Amplifier, I'd suggest
using CIH Hy-Tran. Viscosity Oil has made Hy-Tran since Day #1 and still does. The Deere oil is totally
different than Hy-Tran. Hy-Tran absorbs up to 1-2% water, 303 doesn't. The wet clutch plates in your LPTO
and the sprage in your TA are made to be used with Hy-Tran.

Plate must have some good sticking sealer on it. Just stuck if all bolts are out, upper end of seasonal disconnect lever just goes in a slot to shift a collar with splines and locking dogs. Cant remove the shift lever and shaft until after plate is removed. It has a O ring and on shaft and seal ring on shaft housing that can leak. Two t/a clutch compartment drain holes are close to the tee shaped plate. Make sure oil is not coming from there, unusual for the plate gaskets to suddenly leak a lot.

I’m willing to buy whatever fluid it takes we just have a bunch of 303 buckets and I was questioning since it looked like it had gear oil in it you could just smell it. So the rear end and trans take hytran? And the TA takes hytran? Do you fill the TA separately?

I know the TA gasket was leaking but the T shaped plate had stuff all over it too. I saw the to holes you were talking about they had gunk in them and I thought that section held fluid but is it a dry case there? If it’s leaking up inside I have no way of splitting the tractor here. I’ve got the bolts all out I just don’t wanna break something I figured I have the gasket I might as well change it

Dry compartment above the two holes unless a seal or seals are leaking. T/A and transmission housing is joined. On left side the transmission is the fill level plug and another plug above front plate you removed and on left is to make sure the fluid traveled up to the front. Takes it a while to get up there when first put in at the three bolt plate hole. Oil passes under dry compartment and through a passage on left side of housing for oil traveling to front. They will be oil trapped above the tee shaped plate when you get it loose unless the gasket let it leak out. Some 400 tractors came with gear oil in the transmission. Later IH recommended HY Tran. Not a oil expert myself but in that old of tractor with no internal hydraulics I use hydraulic oil that meets MS-1207 specs. since it gets cold enough that the thicker oil may cause a problem with a working t/a. I crack the drain plugs every so often checking for water.

Awesome thanks for the info. I can’t get that t shaped plate to come off? All the bolts are out and it’s still stuck solid. Does that disconnect have to be moved over to unhook or something?

Had a couple that I had to drive a slim chisel between housings to get off trying to not damage gasket surface or break the plate. Tried beating sides with block of wood between hammer and plate, jarring on bottom before resorting to chisel. As you can see from picture the shifter will just fall out with plate. Changed this one because someone used a to long bolt in shift lever and busted through bolt hole end. Couldn't shift without losing oil.

May be a good idea to leave a couple bolts loosely in the cover until you get it broke loose or you may have it in your lap along with some oil. Just a suggestion

Thanks everyone for the help I finally got that plate off had to beat it with blocks and a chisel (didn’t mess anything up) and it finally came off and good lord was there some nasty junk in there
