I purchased a replacement bell housing 3236D for my F12. So far as I can tell, it has never been used. It has two bolts for the fuel tank support in it. The entire part is painted black. This is the second time I have purchased IH parts, painted black; the first time was some replacement guards for my 25V mower. The color of the mower guards did not catch my attention very much, but the black F12 housing has. Does anyone know the reason for the black paint? I thought it would be plain metal, or painted grey or red…

It was required that ALL castings for IH be sealed as soon as iron castings were cleaned and parting
lines, witness points of sprues and risers finished ground. I never saw black used, mostly an oxidevred
or a yellow. Castings actually shipped to the using plant from the painting contractor. Most castings
were dipped. Allowed raw castings to be stored outside, and kept internal surfaces from rusting. Even
castings that go thru enough heating and cooling cycles can rust, sealing prevents rustting. Also seals
in burnt-in sand and porosity that could cause oil leakage.

Not sure when your casting was made. I kinda doubt it's new old stock from the 1930's but maybe it is. I
know that by 1939 FARMALL was sealing all their castings with red oxide sealer, ever looked inside an H
or M?
