Farmall H Still not cranking fast enough

Ive been having an issue with my Farmall H. Last year, before I put it up for the winter, the thing just wouldnt crank. So I checked the basics, cleaned up all my terminal ends from the battery to the switch to the starter, and all the grounds. Charged the battery. Still nothing. I bypassed the battery and everything and tried to engage the starter directly with jumper cables and it turned over...very very very slow. Figured the starter was pretty much dead, so I ordered a new one and put it in, only to have the same result. Even trying to jump it with 12 volts it still only turns maybe have a revolution before it quits. Its odd because it just started doing this out of nowhere. Cleaned the mating surfaces where the starter bolts on, tried starting with clutch in to take the rear end out of the equation. The motor is not tight, well wore in. I just need some direction here because Im not sure what else to check. Could something in my distributor be causing this? Or something with the coil? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its a 1940 Farmall H, 6 volt, with distributor ignition.

How heavy are your battery cables and ground cable? On 6 volt systems they have to be the heaviest you can get or make. Most jumper cables aren't that heavy so jumping driectly to battery isn't gonna give you that much. If you remove starter andgo directly to it does it turn over fast? I don't know how that one is set up, but does it have a push button switch on the starter? If so check to make sure it is making good contact with starter lug, even if new as it seems to be hard to get good ones these days.

I should have stated that in my original post. The starter spins fast off of the tractor. I have heavy gauge wire on the tractor itself. Im sending 12 volts right to the starter from the jumper cable, wouldnt that make it spin pretty fast?

If your using the common Wal-Mart type jumper cable there not heavy enough to really spin a starter over well. There designed to charge a battery from a good battery in a run car and boost the start on a low battery and that is it.

That said you could well have a bad cable or cables on the tractor and you can look at them all day long and never know if they are good. Battery cable can and do go bad overtime and need to be replaced at times

Take the spark plugs out and see if it cranks fast. Does the tractor sit out in the weather? Cylinders full of water or gas?

If the centrifugal advance springs ar broken, or the shaft is stuck in advance mode it will stop at the top of every stroke. The advance is under the
breaker plate in the distributor. Jim

i switched my W4 over to 12volt, added a new hitachi alternator kit from charlie, pertronix coil and ignition, new plugs and wires, rewired the whole tractor and new battery cables, new battery, rebuilt carb, all new gaskets on motor . motor turns over in less than half a second and fires right up, runs as smooth as a swiss watch.

So after further troubleshooting, found the wire coming from the battery to the starter switch was completely toast. Replaced all wires with 00 cables and she spins faster than Ive ever seen. Thanks for all the advice.
